In his memoir he wrote, "The Americans to avoid an action, left their camp, and marched all night." He was wrong of course -- the Americans had completed their retreat before nightfall and were reasonably well rested. But he didn't know this at the time he made his attack. He also didn't know that Morgan had the opportunity to pick his ground, unlike Buford.
